Pre-Columbian Tooth Color: Guides for Registered in the Digital Era

Objectives: To describe the tooth color of pre-Columbian teeth in two archaeological sites (C-35AC and C-27HM) located in Costa Rica and to discuss which guide registers the better digital technique for postmortem tooth color.
Methods: A total of 165 registered teeth, 57 central incisors, 42 lateral incisors, and 66 canines were evaluated. The shade was taken on the central, lateral, and canine upper teeth with the VITA Easyshade®V (VITA Zahnfabrik) digital spectrophotometer in the middle third of the buccal surfaces in Vita Classical and Vita 3DMaster measurement standards. The data were analyzed using the SPSS program version 25.0 (IBM, New York, USA). Descriptive statistics were performed, establishing both absolute and relative frequencies. Bivariate analysis was conducted using the Chi-square test. A value of p < 0.05, with a 95% confidence interval (CI), was considered statistically significant.
Results: According to the Vita Classical shade guide, 42% of the assessed samples were categorized as color C4, followed by A3.5 and A4. The highest percentage of specimens with color A3.5 were canines (57%), for color A4, the highest percentages were found equally among canines and lateral incisors (36%), and for color C4, the highest percentage was observed in central incisors (51%). Regarding the Vita 3DMaster shade guide, 47% of the assessed samples were categorized as color 5M3 followed by 4M3 and 3M3. The highest percentage of specimens with colors 4M3 and 3M3 were canines and for color 5M3, the highest percentage was observed in central incisors (65%)
Conclusions: For the study of tooth color in postmortem collections the Vita Classic shade guide is recommended to be used because the results are more precise than Vita 3D Master shade guide.
