Staining and Aging-Dependent Translucency of Cloud-Shade and one-Shade Resin Composites

Objectives: To compare the translucency parameter (TP) of two “cloud shade” and two “one-shade” resin composites exposed to staining and aging.
Methods: The “cloud-shade” composites were 3M experimental composite (EX) and SimpliShade (SS) – 3 shades each (light, medium and dark), while the “one shade” composites were Admira Fusion x-tra (AD) and Venus Diamond One (VE). Polymerized composite specimens (10 mm in diameter, 2-mm thick) were polished using PoGo disks for 40 seconds. TP measurements were performed using a benchtop spectrophotometer, against the white and black background, before and after exposure to 3.8-day staining in coffee or wine (equivalent to a year of service with 15-minute exposure per day), or 150 kJ/m2 of accelerated aging (5 replications per condition × 3 conditions = 15 specimens per shade). The differences in CIEDE2000 TP values (DTP00), were calculated. A two-way ANOVA was used to compare the effect of material and procedure, while a Tukey’s posthoc multiple comparison test was used to assess differences among levels within each variable (a=0.05).
Results: AD exhibited the best TP stability upon staining, followed by EX, SS, and VE. EX had the most stable TP when exposed to artificial aging. Statistically significant differences were recorded among materials and procedures (p<0.001), and their interactions (p<0.01).
Conclusions: Staining- and artificial accelerated aging provoked statistically significant material- and procedure-dependent changes of the translucency parameter of cloud-shade and one-shade resin composites.
