Salivary Contamination Affects Bonding of Self-Adhesive Cements

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the 24-hour shear bond strength (SBS) of two self-adhesive resin cements to dentin contaminated with artificial saliva (AS) containing mucin.
Methods: Flat bonding surfaces were prepared on extracted human molars (320 grit surface). Using adhesive tape, a 4.5mm bonding window was prepared on the dentin surfaces. Groups (n=12) were prepared for Rely-X (RX)Universal and G-Cem one (G1) self-adhesive cements. For the control (C) groups the cements were applied per IFU and visible light cured. For the saliva contaminated groups 1.0µl of AS was applied in the bonding window and passively dried at 37°C followed by placement of the cement in an Ultradent bonding fixture and visible light cured for 30 seconds. After water storage for 24 hours at 37°C the specimens were debonded and SBS was calculated (MPa). 2-way ANOVA and LSD post-hoc test was used for determining group differences at p<0.05. Condition and adhesive were significant factors (p≤0.0005). 1-way ANOVA was used to identify differences per adhesive (capital letter) or condition (letter) at p<0.05.
Results: Gorups with a differnt capital letter or small letter were statisically different (p<0.05). Both cements and saliva contamination were significant factors for shear bond strength to dentin (p<0.05).
Conclusions: Salivary contamination was a factor in the SBS of resin cements to dentin.
