Tooth Whitening Efficacy of a Powered Toothbrush and a Toothpaste Containing 2% Hydrogen Peroxide

Objectives: The objective of this study is to investigate the tooth whitening efficacy of a Powered Toothbrush (PTB) and a toothpaste containing 2% hydrogen peroxide as compared to a standard manual toothbrush and a regular fluoride toothpaste
Methods: A phase III, randomized, double-blind, two-cell and parallel-group clinical study was conducted on healthy subjects (18-70 years). A shade rank assessment was performed on subjects in order to qualify. Shade rank scores were taken before a prophylaxis, after a prophylaxis, at 7 days and 14 days. Subjects were either assigned a powered toothbrush and a 2% hydrogen peroxide toothpaste(test group) or a soft bristled toothbrush and a regular fluoride toothpaste (control group). The test group brushed for 3 mins (1 minute with the White Mode function), twice a day and the control group brushed for 2 mins, twice a day.
Results: The between treatment analysis showed that the test group, relative to subjects in the control group, exhibited an improvement of 0.05 in mean tooth shade at the post-prophylaxis baseline examination. At the 7 day examination, relative to subjects in the control group, subjects in the test group exhibited a statistically significant improvement of 2.45 (p< 0.001) in mean tooth shade. At the 14 day examination, relative to subjects in the control group, subjects in the test group exhibited a statistically significant improvement of 3.64 (p< 0.001) in mean tooth shade.
Conclusions: The results of this clinical study supports the conclusions that a regimen encompassing the PTB + a 2% hydrogen peroxide Toothpaste containing 0.76% Na MFP provided a statistically significant greater level tooth shade guide improvement as compared to the regimen encompassing the manual toothbrush + Toothpaste containing 0.76% Na MFP.
