Epidemiological Surveys in Brazilian Oral Health: a Methodological Analysis
Objectives: The objective of this study is to analyze the methodologies employed in the National Epidemiological Surveys on Oral Health in Brazil with the aim of contributing to their improvement, by examining their epidemiological transition phase, health situation, and population diagnoses through the results obtained. Methods: The study was conducted through searches in books, journals, and databases such as LILACS, MEDLINE, EMBASE, WEB OF SCIENCE, and SCIELO, as well as the final reports of epidemiological surveys on oral health conducted nationwide in 1986, 1993, 1996, 2003, 2010, and 2020. Results: The surveys expanded the scope of the evaluated indices. There is evidence of improvement in the development of work processes of epidemiological surveys, especially regarding the population coverage, calibration, and results assessment. Water fluoridation was associated with satisfactory outcomes. Conclusions: The development of oral health diagnoses at the national level represents technical-scientific maturity, epidemiology policy, and collective oral health. The SB Brazil Program was a precursor in national epidemiological organization, demonstrating the evolution of research methods.
