Root Resorption in Patients Submitted to Treatment of Deep Overbite

Objectives: This study objective to evaluate the presence of root resorption and its degree of severity in maxillary and mandibular incisors of patients treated with orthodontic treatment using an anterior fixed stop associated with the fixed braces during the treatment.
Methods: The periapical radiographs compose the study sample since this type of intraoral examination allows the visualization of the entire tooth and its underlying relationships, making it possible to identify the different degrees of root resorption correctly. We selected 40 patients and 80 periapical radiographs (pre and after orthodontic treatment). Divided into two groups: experimental and control. The experimental study consists of 40 periapical radiographs of 20 patients with a deep overbite, with coverage of at least 2/3 of the crown of the lower incisors, treated by an anterior fixed stop associated with a fixed orthodontic appliance. The control group consists of a sample of 40 periapical radiographs of 20 patients with a normal overbite, with coverage of up to 1/3 of the crown of the lower incisors, treated without the association of other devices that promote mouth opening.
Results: A descriptive analysis of means, standard deviations, minimum and maximum values, and absolute/relative data frequency was performed. There were no static differences between the evaluated groups
Conclusions: Being an overbite one of the most frequent malocclusions in patients seeking orthodontic treatment, making it it is highly relevant to study the prevalence of possible complications resulting from the use of anterior fixed abutments, especially root resorption, to know the factors predisposing factors, such as well as alternative to reduce its biological cost.
