Adrenomedullin and Periodontal Disease:Scoping Review

Objectives: To systematically address the role of Adrenomedullin in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease and find potential knowledge gap in this area of research
Methods: The scoping review was guided by Arksey and O’Malley’s methodological framework (2005) as well as by other relevant literature sources focusing on enhancing scoping review methodology. In order to identify the relevant studies, electronic searches were carried out via OVID in Embase, MEDLINE, PsycINFO (1960 to 2022 April week 3), CINAHL (1998 to 2022 April week 3) and WoS (1998 to 2022 April week 3). Mendeley citation manager was used to upload all the eligible articles and duplicates were excluded. Two individual reviewers assessed the eligible articles for the ‘titles’, ‘abstracts’, and the ‘full text’ of the selected citations against the inclusion criteria.
Results: A total of 281 possibly relevant articles were identified through the search strategy. After completing the screening titles and abstracts and eliminating duplicates, 130 studies were retrieved, and their full-text versions were collected for further assessment. Out of these 130 studies were subjected to full article review eligibility, and 130 articles were excluded. The reasons for excluding full-text articles are as follows: The articles were not suitable for our research question, and articles consisting of literature reviews without any original data. Finally, 9 articles were found to be eligible and could be included in this review.
Conclusions: Literature related to Adrenomedullin (ADM) and periodontal disease are scares with no randomized controlled trials in the studies. The probable role of ADM in periodontal disease should be explored further.
