Peer-Implementation Strategies in Health: a Scoping Review
Objectives: The use of peer support consists of a strategy that uses non-professionals, raised to the condition of “leaders”, inserted within a context, helping technique and emotionally people with social weaknesses or certain illnesses to adapt, transform, and/or strengthen their health habits. The objectives of the present study are; 1) to carry out a scoping review of peer implementation of health actions from 2015 to 2022, and 2) to present their potentialities in implementation science research of health actions, including oral health. Methods: Methods. This study mapped peer support in the implementation science of health actions based on the guide for scoping reviews of the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology. A database search was carried out in Pubmed, Scielo, Scopus, and Web of science. We searched for randomized clinical trials that compared the use of peer support with control groups ( without any other intervention or that used different strategies for interventions in health). We used the PICO strategy for the search. Results: Results. Initially, we mapped 145 articles, among which 37 articles were selected according to the criteria of eligibility. The main implementation outcomes analyzed in the studies were the adoption (n=10); adherence (n=6); acceptability (n=8), followed by sustainability (n=5), effectiveness (n=5), feasibility (n=2), reach (n=2), and adequacy (n=2), while fidelity and scalability were measured in only one study each. The health outcomes were concentrated on five major themes: Mental Health (n=5), Infectious Diseases (n=15), chronic diseases (n=10), Health Education (n=5), and two involved outcomes in health for drug users. Generally, implementation and health outcomes were better in groups that used peer support for implementation strategies in health. None of the studies were used in oral health promotion. Conclusions: Conclusion. The peer support implementation strategy can be used in different health contexts, especially when social support is needed. it creates an environment that helps implementation outcomes such as the reach, sustainability, adoption, and acceptability of users to health services provided. Implementation studies in oral health need to develop these strategies, especially in behavioral changes for health promotion.
