Impact of war on Oral Health Among Children: a Systematic Review

Objectives: War and armed conflict result in considerable human casualties and are a leading cause of disability globally. Conflict-related conditions result in more mortality and disability than any major disease and especially children may undergo detrimental health effects, according to evidence. This study aims to assess the impact of war on oral health among children.
War and armed conflict result in considerable human casualties and are a leading cause of disability globally. Conflict-related conditions result in more mortality and disability than any major disease and especially children may undergo detrimental health effects, according to evidence. This study aims to assess the impact of war on oral health among children.
Methods: A systematic search of databases with no language restriction and year of publication was undertaken. Cross-sectional studies assessing the impact of war on oral health status of children were included. Quality assessment of the studies was done using Newcastle Ottawa scale, Joanna Briggs Instrument and United States national toxicology program tool.
Results: Certain studies reported an increase in dental caries among children during wartime whereas some studies reported a decrease between 35-60% as well, traumatic injuries were also prevalent.
Conclusions: An increased resistance of the teeth and a decrease in the environmental factors are mostly the factors affecting oral health among children during war time. The turn of the caries curve after the war differs according to the age-group.
