Comparison of the Quality of Life of Principal Caregivers of Children With and Without Cleft Lip Palate Attending a University Dental Clinic.
Objectives: To compare the QoL of the main caregivers of children with CLP who attended a Surgery Clinic with those who attended the Pediatric Dentistry Clinic, both of them in the National School of Higher Studies (ENES), from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), in León, Mexico.
Methods: A paired cross-sectional study was carried out from May to December 2021. The study included caregivers of children with CLP who attended the Surgery Clinic and the caregivers of patients of the Pediatric Dentistry Clinic without CLP. The sample size was calculated based on a OR=2.5 to have a poor QoL given the presence of CLP. Patients were selected by convenience. A standardized examiner applied a questionnaire containing sociodemographic items and the instrument WHOQOL Bref to assess QoL
Results: 140 caregivers were included (n=70 on each group). Mean age was 33.31 ± 10.51 years, with a larger proportion of female (91.4% in case group and 85.7% in control group). 80% of the role of caregivers was performed by the mother. Multivariate analysis showed that caregivers who have children with CLP are 3.2 times more likely to have a poor QoL, while those with clinical levels of stress are 1.02 times more likely to have a poor QoL.
Conclusions: There is an association between a poor QoL with the caring of a child with CLP. It is necessary to keep proposing better comprehensive treatments that include not only the required surgeries to correct this anomaly but also the psychological support to the patients and their caregivers.
