Designing Specifications of Inlay/Onlay Virtual Models for Learning Clinical Competence

Objectives: Simulation can facilitate the teaching of inlay/onlay preparations by importing real 3D patient intra-oral scans of pathologically broken-down teeth into VR dental haptic simulators. This offers dental students a unique opportunity to practice designing inlay/onlay preparations on a large variety of realistic models in a safe environment and become well-prepared before treating patients. The research conducted specifies the design of the Virtual and Augmented reality models (VR and AR) for learning clinical competence with various simulation technologies (haptics, VR, 3D scanner, mobile devices). Moreover, a learning design specification is also in development to complement the pedagogical innovation with haptics.
Methods: A group consisting of two students, three teaching/research staff and three learning technologists (dental and health informatics) participated in this project to develop interactive VR/ AR models that students can use on mobile devices to plan inlay/onlay design as preparatory learning activities before performing the procedure with haptics simulators.
Results: In this research, the following specifications and outcomes were achieved:
● development of virtual 3D models from of real-life patients.
● delivered digital VR models on a 3D web platform that can be viewed on mobile devices e.g. here https://tinyurl.com/y3ndkcst
● integration of digitally scanned models into the haptics simulators for students to perform their design plan.

To design the clinical scenarios that will be used for teaching with these models, a competence criterion to assess students learning in preparing inlay/onlay with simulation is being developed with clinical teachers.
Conclusions: The design specification provides potential applications for developing an interactive and digital approach for developing and designing inlay/onlay teeth models and accompanying learning designs for learning clinical competence with simulation technologies (haptics, VR, 3D scanner, mobile devices).
