Association of Childhood Oral Health With Adulthood Risk of Type-2-Diabetes
Objectives: Previous studies have found associations between oral and systemic health in adults, yet little is known about the impact of childhood oral health on long-term systemic health. Started in 1972, The Danish National Child Odontology Register (SCOR), holds detailed information on the oral health of nearly all Danish children and adolescents from up-to yearly dental examinations. In combination with other nationwide Danish registers SCOR provides a unique data source. We aim to examine the association between childhood oral health and the risk of developing type-2-diabetes (T2D) in adulthood. Methods: Analyses were done using data on oral health of all 1,667,846 individuals enrolled in SCOR since 1972 and aged between 30 and 55 at the end of follow-up in 2018. Oral health was measured as the highest registered level of destroyed-missing-filled-teeth for each individual (dental caries), and the most severe case of gingivitis and periodontitis, respectively. Information on adulthood T2D was obtained from the National Patient Register and the Register of Selected Chronic Diseases. Information on socioeconomic factors (education level and civil status) were drawn from Statistics Denmark. Cox-regression models with age as the underlying time variable, adjusting for sex and socioeconomic factors, will be used to examine the association between childhood oral health and adulthood risk of T2D. Results: Of the total study population, 92.97% (n=1,550,539) had at least one registration of dental caries in childhood, 13.38% (n=223,083) a registration of gingivitis, and 0.37% (n=6,095) of periodontitis. By 2018, 2.03% (n=34,072) of study population had been registered with T2D. Results of the planned Cox regression analysis will be presented at the conference in June 2023. Conclusions: Given the extensive nature of our data the planned study promises to be an important contribution to the field of Oral-Systemic Health.
