Calendula Officinalis, Use in Dentistry as Antifungal and Healing Agent
Objectives: This study aims to demonstrate the effects of Calendula Officinalis (CO) as an alternative to Chlorhexidine (CHX) mouthwash used in dentistry. Methods: By carrying out 3 tests; sensidisc test, germicidal test and scratch assay, CHX was compared with the infusion of CO flower and CO fluid extract at different concentrations. Results: The inhibition halo is shown for CO extract at 100%, 50% and 25%, not very different from CHX. There is an effective germicidal action, showing sensitivity of Candida albicans to the 50% CO extract. In the different treatments an increase in cell migration was observed with respect to the control being significant in the culture treated with 50% extract diluted with DMEM. Conclusions: It can be concluded that CO extract presentation has a potent antifungal effect, there is also a high Schwann cell healing effect in CO flower infusion and extract, with the extract having a greater impact. Calendula officinalis can be used as a safe and effective alternative mouthwash in dentistry, as a postoperative rinse in oral surgery and as a fungicidal mouthwash.
