Dentin Bond Strength of Experimental Antibacterial Bonding Agents

Objectives: To investigate the effect of structures of antibacterial monomers on the dentin bond strength of new experimental antibacterial dental bonding agents.
Methods: Antibacterial dimethacrylate monomers (C16DC2DMA or BisC11DDMA) containing DABCO dication have been synthesized. AMII is a synthesized monomethacrylate containing long chain benzalkonium salt. Two experimental antibacterial self-etch primers were formulated as Primers 1 and Primer 2, containing 2%AMII and 2%BisC11DCDMA, respectively, and other ingredients. Two experimental antibacterial adhesives were formulated as Adhesive 1 and Adhesive2 containing 10% C16DC2DMA and 10%BisC11DDMA, respectively, and other dental monomers. Four experimental bonding agents consisted of the combinations of the above primers and adhesives (shown in Table 1). ClearfilTM SE Protect (Kuraray) was used as Control. Microtensile bonding strength (MTBS) of the bonding agents was tested on the dentin of extracted human teeth after 24h and 3-month storage in deionized water. The data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey test (α=0.05).
Results: The results are shown in Table 1. Most experimental antibacterial dental bonding agents have similar MTBS to the control. The combination of Adhesive 2 with of either Primer 1 or Primer 2 seems to generate higher bond strength than the control.
Conclusions: The experimental antibacterial dental bonding agents have similar or higher bond strength than the control (a commercial antibacterial bonding agent).
