Comparative Study of Dentin Occlusion of a New Sensitivity Toothpaste

Objectives: To investigate the in vitro dentin occlusion of a new sensitivity toothpaste containing 8% arginine, calcium carbonate, and zinc phosphate (ZnP) versus two sensitivity toothpaste products containing 0.454% stannous fluoride and sodium fluoride, utilizing a Leica DCM8 3D Microscope.
Methods: Cut dentin specimens from human teeth were polished, etched with 1% citric acid, dried and imaged. The surfaces of human dentin specimens were treated with toothpaste slurries by brushing 1 part PBS to 3 parts toothpaste for 30 seconds. Samples were allowed to sit for 15 minutes at room temperature, placed in 10 ml PBS, stirred at 125-130 rpm for 15 minutes, rinsed and dried. The procedure was completed for a total of five applications. Treated specimens were again imaged with a Leica DCM8 3D Microscope. Quantification of tubular occlusion was calculated using the Leica Map V 7.1 coupled with an imaging and analysis program. The analysis of variance test was used to compare the mean % occlusion for each of the toothpastes. A subsequent Tukey multiple comparison test was performed to assess pairwise comparisons of the toothpastes.
Results: The results of this in vitro study showed that, after five treatments, the test toothpaste containing 8% arginine, calcium carbonate, and zinc phosphate, had significantly greater mean % occlusion (81%) versus both sensitivity toothpaste products containing 0.454% stannous fluoride and sodium fluoride (49% and 52%).
Conclusions: The results from this in vitro study indicate that the treatment of dentin specimens with a new toothpaste containing arginine, calcium carbonate, and zinc phosphate, exhibit significantly greater occlusion when compared to both stannous-containing toothpastes and is highly effective at occluding dentin tubules.
