Correlation Between Width and Length of Maxillary Central Incisor, Arch, and Face
Objectives: The aim was to find whether a correlation existed between the width and length of the maxillary central incisor with the corresponding measurements of the maxillary arch and face. This study aimed at discovering an easy and practical way to choose the most appropriate size of maxillary anterior teeth using a simple mathematical equation Methods: Fifty-seven participants, recruited from Kuwait University Dental Clinic, were included. Irreversible hydrocolloid impressions were made for each patient and poured with dental stone. For the maxillary central incisor, the width was measured at the greatest mesio-distal dimension, and the length from the zenith point to the incisal edge. For the maxillary arch, the length was measured from the facial surface of the maxillary central incisor to the distal most surface of the maxillary second molars, and the width from the cervical aspect of the palatal surface of the second molars. Facialmeasurements were done using frontal photographs. The length of the face was determined as the distance between the interpupillary line and the lowest point of the chin, and the width from the right to left tragus. The measurements were analyzed using SPSS and tested through ANOVA. Results: The findings indicated that there was no correlation between the width of the maxillary central incisor and the width of the arch or that of the face. The length of the incisor and the length of the face were found to be uncorrelated as well. The only correlation that was found was between the length of the central incisor and the length of the arch. Conclusions: In conclusion, the length of the arch can be used as a guide and reference value in the estimation of the length of the maxillary central incisors.
