Dentin Bond Performance of Universal Adhesives Containing Different HEMA Concentrations

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of HEMA concentrations on microtensile bond strength (μTBS) of universal adhesives to dentin after 24-hour water storage.
Methods: Thirty-two caries-free extracted human third molars (Ethics Committee Protocol #2018/9) were sectioned to obtain mid-coronal flat dentin surfaces. Smear layers were standardized using #600 SiC papers under water cooling. The teeth were randomly divided into 4 groups for microtensile bond strength test (n = 8) as per the adhesive system. Three universal adhesives [BeautiBond Xtreme (BEX, Shofu Inc.), Experimental 1 (BEX001, Shofu Inc.), and Experimental 2 (BEX002, Shofu Inc.)], and a two-step self-etch adhesive (FL-BOND II, FLB, Shofu Inc.) were tested. The universal adhesives BEX, BEX001 and BEX002 differed in their HEMA concentration - 0%, 5%, and 10%, respectively. After bonding each adhesive according to the manufacturer's instructions, composite build-ups were constructed; specimens were stored in water (37°C/24h) and sectioned into beams (1.0 mm2). The beams were fixed to a microtensile testing machine and tested under tension until failure. Failure analysis was performed using a stereomicroscope and SEM.
Results: Bond strength data followed a normal and homogeneous distribution and were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (α = 0.05). The mean (SD) μTBS values ranged from 44.28 (6.77) MPa for BEX to 50.61 (10.10) MPa for BEX002. However, there was no statistically significant difference among the tested adhesive systems (F = 1.084; p = 0.372). The failure mode was predominantly adhesive for all groups (average: 90.5%).
Conclusions: The concentrations of HEMA did not affect the bonding of universal adhesives to human dentin. The bond strength results of the universal adhesives were compatible to those of the two-step self-etch adhesive.
