Effects of Bioactive Restorative Materials on Dentine Microhardness

Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of five different restorative materials, labeled as bioactive, on dentine microhardness.
Methods: Effects of five materials used in restorative dentistry were examined; three types of glass-ionomer cements ( EQUIA Forte® HT, GC Fuji TRIAGE®, Riva Self Cure), calcium silicate-based cement (Biodentine®) and an alkasite material ( Cention® Forte). Non-bioactive composite material was used for the control group (3M™ Filtek™ Universal). 18 dentine discs of 2 mm thickness were obtained from extracted third human molars, using a diamond saw. On each specimen a standard 3 mm x 3 mm cavity was prepared using a diamond bur. Prior to filling the cavities with the examined materials, the samples were demineralized by immersing each individual one in a solution containing 0.0476 mM sodium fluoride (NaF), 2.2 mM calcium chloride dihydrate (CaCl22H2O), 2.2 mM potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KH2PO4), 50 mM acetic acid (CH3COOH), and 10 mM potassium hydroxide (KOH) at pH 5 for five days. After using the restorative materials the samples were kept in saline for 14 days. Fresh saline was prepared every 48 h. The microhardness of the sample surface was determined by the Vickers method in triplicate, in three stages; baseline value, after demineralization and after the period of incubation. Data were subjected to ANOVA test.
Results: Obtained results showed that there were no significant differences in microhardness values obtained for all materials tested in each of the tesing phases; (ANOVA test results for measurements: initial p= 0.52, after demineralization p= 0.52 and after incubation p= 0.11).
Conclusions: It can be concluded that the usage of all five examined materials leads to similar increase in dentine microhardness.
