Evaluation of Adhesive Strength of Six Bonding Protocols to Zirconia

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the adhesive strength [AS] of 3 bonding protocols-self-etching resin cements/bonding agents -with and without sandblasting treatment- to zirconia.
Methods: A sample of 9 cement cylinders/adhesive system (2mmX1.0mmH) per study group was used in this in vitro experimental study. 6 groups were evaluated with 3 bonding agents and their respective cements - SingleBond-Universal/RELYX-Ultimate, All-Bond-Universal/Duo-link-Universal and Z-Prime-Plus/Duo-link-Universal, and 3 of the groups were treated with micro-sandblasting. 18 zirconia sheets (12mmLx10mmWx3mmH) were fabricated, coded and randomly assigned to the 6 study groups and three cylinders per sheets were fabricated and cemented. The sheets were designed in the Rhinoceros-3D system, processed in the EXOCAD software, machined on the Programill-PM5 milling machine and sintered in the Programat-CS4 furnace. For AS evaluation, each zirconia sheet was placed in the universal electromechanical testing machine and a compressive load was applied to the base of each cylinder at a rate of 0.5 mm/min and the results were reported in MPa. As the data did not follow a normal distribution, they were analyzed descriptively through medians [Me-RIQ] and they were compared using Kruskal Wallis and Bonferroni-corrected-Mann-Whitney-U test (p<0.005).
Results: Significant differences were found among all groups (p=0.001). The lowest AS of the entire study was presented by the SingleBond-Universal/RELYX-Ultimate- sandblasting group (16.8MPa (14.7-20.6)) -(p=0.001). The highest AS was found for the Z-Prime-Plus/Duo-link-Universal™ sandblasting (43.1MPa (38.1-49.4)) and non sandblasting (42.3MPa (36.9-45.9)), and the All-Bond-Universal/Duo-link-Universal- non sandblasting (41.9MPa (38.9-43.1)) groups. Within the non sandblasting groups, the lowest AS was presented by the SingleBond-Universal/RELYX-Ultimate group (p=0.0015) and the highest AS of the sandblasted groups was presented by the Z-Prime-Plus/Duo-link-Universal group (p=0.0003) (Image 1).
Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that AS is determined by the cement-bonding used and not by the micromechanical surface treatment.
