Association Between Periodontitis and Diabetes Among Filipinos

Objectives: Previous investigations support a bidirectional relationship between periodontitis and diabetes mellitus. However, research on the association of the two chronic diseases in a Filipino population is limited. This study aimed to determine the association between periodontitis and diabetes among Filipino patients in a University dental school clinic.
Methods: The study protocol was approved by the Research Ethics Board of the University. In this retrospective case-control study, the prevalence of diabetes was evaluated in 277 periodontitis patients who had sought periodontal treatment at the University’s dental school clinic during two academic years (2016-2017 and 2017-2018). This prevalence was compared with a control group of 277 gingivitis patients, who were matched to the periodontitis cases based on age, sex, educational attainment and smoking status. Periodontal statuses had been previously determined based on the 1999 Classification of Periodontal Diseases and Conditions. The periodontal charts were retrospectively reviewed for conformity of diagnoses with the 2018 Classification. The diabetic statuses were self-reported and were retrieved from the patients’ medical records. Odds ratio (OR) was computed through conditional logistic regression analysis using STATA version 14.1, at 0.05 significance level.
Results: Diabetes was found in 13 of 277 (4.69%) periodontitis patients, while only 1.81% of gingivitis controls had diabetes (p= 0.0408). Conditional logistic regression analysis yielded an OR of 2.99 [95% CI= 0.97-9.30]. However, the computed odds was not statistically significant (p= 0.057).
Conclusions: Based on the results of the study, the prevalence of diabetes among Filipino periodontitis patients in a University dental school clinic was significantly higher compared to the prevalence among gingivitis controls. However, based on conditional logistic regression analysis, the association between periodontitis and diabetes did not reach statistical significance.
