Superhydrophobic Coating: for Caries Prevention

Objectives: To develop a superhydrophobic coating for dental caries prevention.
Methods: Using anhydrous ethanol as dispersant, micrometer-scale tetrapod-like zinc oxide and nanoscale hydrophobic fumed silica were wrapped by methacrylate-functionalized polydimethylsiloxane(Ma-PDMS), then a superhydrophobic coating with three-scale roughness was constructed on the cut bovine tooth specimen by a simple spraying method. The unsprayed and Ma-PDMS-coated bovine tooth slices were used as the control group, and five samples were set in the experimental group and the control group (n = 5). The surface wettability and friction resistance of the coating were studied by detecting the contact angle(CA), receding contact angle(RCA) and CA after friction(CAF). The adhesion and bactericidal properties of the coating were studied by Streptococcus mutans(S. mutans) adhesion test and bacteriostatic ring test. The biocompatibility of the coating was studied by MC3T3-E1 cell cytotoxicity assay. The sources of superhydrophobicity of the coating were studied by surface morphology characterization.
Results: The superhydrophobic coating with three-scale roughness was successfully developed on the surface of bovine teeth with CA greater than 160°, RCA less than 10°, and CAF greater than 150°. Furthermore, the superhydrophobic coating exhibited over 95% effective anti-adhesion efficiency against S. mutans within 12 hours, negative inhibition zone and good cell compatibility.
Conclusions: The superhydrophobic coating is physically resistant to the adhesion of cariogenic bacteria. The anti-adhesion effect is high and durable, and the preparation method is simple, which provides a new idea for clinical and family caries prevention.
