Gamification Learning in Dental Education

Objectives: The effectiveness of gamification learning has been researched in various environments, from K-12 classrooms to medical school lectures. Incorporating interactive elements using technology has been shown to increase enjoyment and effectiveness of learning. This study investigated the usage of a gamification platform called Kahoot! in the dental school environment.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year UNLV dental students. The online survey consisted of 12 questions that explore topics such as enjoyment, effectiveness, and motivation in playing Kahoot!.
Results: A total of 206 individuals participated in the study: 63% male and 36% female, 70 Year 1, 52 Year 2, 48 Year 3, 36 Year 4 students. The students reported that Kahoot! is fun, increases motivation, and is an effective learning aid that helps their understanding of lecture material and allows them to retain that knowledge for their exams. Males attempted to answer questions during game sessions more often than females. First year students report higher motivation to pay attention during lecture, while 2nd year students report higher anxiety from playing Kahoot compared to students in other years.
Conclusions: Kahoot! is a learning tool that has favorable reviews from dental students. Students enjoy playing the game and believe it is an effective tool in learning difficult concepts, motivating them to study and review the lecture material.
