Clinical Evaluation of PVS Materials Using Intraoral and Lab Scanners

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that there is no significant difference between the accuracy of two PVS impression materials after scanning with in-lab scanners
Methods: Fourteen subjects received a set of upper and lower removable complete dentures RCD. Impressions of each maxillary and mandibular RCD were obtained using two PVS impression materials (heavy [H] or medium [M] body with light [L] body. The maxillary and mandibular RCD were then scanned utilizing intraoral scanners Trios [TR]. The PVS impressions were sent to the lab to be further scanned by a lab scanner (3shape in-lab scanner). STL files of the maxillary and mandibular intraoral and lab scans were obtained, trimmed using the GeoMagic X Software. The files were merged and the gap measured in 60 points for each two merged files [HL Vs ML], [HL Vs TR] and [ML Vs TR]
Results: There was no significant difference between [HL Vs TR ] with mean 37 ± 10 µ. There was a statistically significant difference between [ ML Vs TR] and [HL Vs ML] with mean 62 ± 21 µ and 50 ± 21 µ, respectfully.
Conclusions: Within the study's limitation, using a heavy and light body provide superior quality of impression using in lab scanner and comparable to the intraoral scanner. The null hypothesis was rejected.
