Multicenter RCT Evaluating the Survival of two Restorative Materials: Three-Year Follow-up
Objectives: To compare the survival of ART restorations using High Viscosity Glass-ionomer cement (HVGIC) with conventional restorations using resin composite in Class II cavities of permanent teeth, in 1 center in Brazil (Bauru) and 1 in Argentina (Cordoba), in a 3-year follow-up. Methods: 326 restorations were made in this parallel and randomized clinical trial multicenter study, 162 restorations for the group 1 (ART restorations with Equia Fil-GC Corporation) and 164 restorations for the group 2 (conventional restoration with Z350-3M). For ART restorations, retentive grooves were made in proximal boxes. Restorations were evaluated at 6 months, 1 , 2 and 3 years using the ART criterion. The Kaplan-Meier Survival Analysis, method log-Rank (p<0.05) were used for statistical analysis. Results: According to ART criterion, the 3-year cumulative survival percentages of class II restorations were 91.1% for group 1 and 90.2% for group 2. No differences were observed in the cumulative survival percentages between the two treatment groups at 3 years (ART criterion: p=0.942). Conclusions: HVGIC Equia Fil in combination with the ART method and Filtek Z250 used with the conventional restorations may be viable alternatives to the traditional amalgam for restoring class II cavities.
