Retention of Ceramic Copings Luted With RMGI and Resin Cement

Objectives: To measure the retentive tensile strength of lithium disilicate and zirconia copings cemented with RMGI cement and universal resin cement with and without tooth primer (AEP).
Methods: 40 extracted non-carious mandibular premolar teeth were mounted in acrylic filled cylinders. The teeth were divided into five groups(n=8) and prepared to uniform dimensions (20°taper) and 3.5mm preparation height. The surface area of prepared teeth was calculated with digital microscopy. The teeth were scanned with True Definition Scanner (3M). Lithium disilicate (LiSi Block, GC) and zirconia (Zirlux 16) copings were fabricated following manufacturers recommendations. The intaglio surfaces were pretreated depending on substrate and some groups were treated with G-Multi Primer (GMP). The crowns were then cemented with either an RMGI cement (FujiCEM Evolve - FCE) or resin cement (G-CEM ONE - GCO). Crowns were allowed to self-cure under a 2.5kg weight, stored in a moist bag for 24hours at 37°C and then thermocycled for 10,000 cycles from 5-500C with a 30second dwell time. The specimens were placed in a custom fixture in a universal testing machine and loaded in tension at a crosshead speed of 5mm/min until debonding. The tensile strength (MPa) at debonding was calculated using the maximum recorded tensile force and surface area of the preparation. Data were compared with a 1-way ANOVA and Tukey analysis (alpha=0.05).
Results: Significant differences between groups were noted with 1-way ANOVA(p<.01). The universal resin cement with tooth primer showed the highest retentive strength.
Conclusions: 1. The novel resin cement showed exceptional retentive strength with lithium disilicate 2. MDP or silane primer pretreatment is not required for the tested RMGI cement.
