Novel Universal Cement Bond Strength to Multiple Substrates

Objectives: To evaluate shear bond strength(SBS) of a new universal cement with primer and self-adhesive options to dentin, enamel, glass ceramic and zirconia after 10min, 24h and 10,000-thermocycles.
Methods: Slabs were mounted from Initial Zirconia and Initial LiSi Block, finished through 600-grit before sandblasting (50µm, 4bar) or etching (9.6% HF, 20s). Extracted human molars were mounted and prepared (600-grit) for superficial dentin and enamel. Materials tested were G-CEM ONE with G-Multi Primer and Adhesive Enhancing Primer (GCOP) and without primers (GCO), RelyX Unicem 2 (UC2, 3M) with RelyX Ceramic Primer on LiSi, RelyX Ultimate (RXU, 3M) with Scotchbond Universal, Maxcem Elite (MCE, KaVo) with KaVo Kerr Silane Primer on LiSi, Panavia V5 with Primers (PAN, Kuraray). Indirect SBS specimens (n=8, N=528) were prepared with single sided PTFE tape with a 3mm diameter hole, filled with cement and a stainless-steel cylinder was placed and cured without light for 10min at 37C and 99% humidity. Test conditions: 10min, 24h and 10,000-thermocycles. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Fisher’s PLSD at the 0.05 level of significance.
Results: GCO had the highest or equivalent self-adhesive SBS in all 9 groups tested and GCOP had the highest or equivalent adhesive SBS in all 9 groups tested. GCOP using Adhesive Enhancing Primer with touch curing had the highest SBS (27.8MPa) after 10 min to dentin followed by PAN (11.1) and RXU (6.2) with no significant drop in SBS to tooth structure after thermocycling.
Conclusions: G-CEM ONE has exceptional bond strength durability after thermocycling to all substrates tested, and high initial bond strength after limited curing time in combination with the Adhesive Enhancing Primer including touch curing technology.
