Wear Resistance of a new Self-Adhesive Resin Cement

Objectives: To evaluate the in vitro wear resistance of six self-adhesive resin cements in the light-cure and self-cure mode using a three-body wear test.
Methods: Six self-adhesive resin cements were tested: G-CEM ONE (GC), RelyX Unicem 2 (3M), Maxcem Elite (Kerr), SpeedCem Plus (Ivoclar Vivadent), PANAVIA SA Cement Universal (Kuraray), Calibra Universal (Dentsply Sirona). Stainless steel mold (Diameter: 2.1 mm) were filled with the resin cements and pressed with plastic sheets. The resin cements were cured either in light-cure or self-cure mode. After 24 hours storage period in distilled water (37 °C), the three-body wear test was performed in a wear testing machine for 100,000 cycles with indirect contact with PMMA plate (n=4, test load: 300 g). A mixture of PMMA beads and glycerin was used as intermediate abrasive. Wear depth was determined from a difference in height of specimen before and after the test by using micrometer. Data were statically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s test with significance level of P < 0.01.
Results: Results are summarized in the table. After 3-body wear simulation, RelyX Unicem 2, SpeedCem Plus and Calibra Universal showed significantly high wear depth in self-cure mode. G-CEM ONE presented lower volume loss than the other groups in both light-cure and self-cure mode.
Conclusions: The wear resistance can significantly differ from one brand of resin cement to another. G-CEM ONE presented the best wear resistance regardless the curing mode These results indicate that G-CEM ONE will maintain an invisible cement line, enabling high aesthetic indirect restorations.
