Educational Program for Healthcare Personnel in Venezuela
Objectives: Propose an Educational Program for Healthcare personnel based on the updating and training needs of a public health service in Venezuela Methods: A qualitative, descriptive, cross-sectional research was carried out in IMCAS-Salud Chacao health institution, Caracas-Venezuela. The research was divided into 2 stages: (i) Evaluation of the updating and training needs of the Healthcare personnel (ii) Design of an Educational Program. The sample consisted of 14 members from the institutional staff (4 Managers, 2 Doctors and 8 Dentists). The methodological strategies to evaluate the personnel’s needs were: participant observation, interview and document review. Such strategies were developed using observation guide, semi-structured interview guide and questionnaire. The questionnaire was statistically validated under the judgment of experts and parameters of content validity index, using Lawshe modified by Tristan method (CVI=0.80) and internal consistency, using Cronbach’s Alpha (α=0.84). Informed consent was signed by each participant. The program design was based on guidelines proposed by PAHO, and the following were identified: institutional demographic context, target population, benefits, and objectives of the program. Subsequently, the structure of the Educational Program was stablished into four components: Organization, Education, Execution, and Resource Management Results: The results were analyzed using inductive and comparative methods. They indicated that: (1) there was an absence of a structured and documented educational program within the institution; (2) isolated training actions without planning, established frequency and hierarchy were observed; (3) a needs assessment does not seem to be developed; (4) oral health was identified as essential content to be included in a program. Based on these results an educational program that includes updated teaching technologies, (eLearning), and a multidisciplinary approach was developed (Figure 1) Conclusions: The study emphasized the need to develop a cost-effectively educational program that allows professional development and positive practice improvement, with further contribution to the quality of their healthcare
