Bonding Effectiveness of the Multi-Step Self-Etching Adhesive to Dentin

Objectives: To investigate the micro-tensile bond strength (μTBS) of the multi-step self-etching adhesives to dentin
Methods: Sixteen mid-coronal sound dentin surface were prepared from extracted human third molars using a 320-grit SiC paper. Resin composite (Clearfil AP-X A3; Kuraray) was bonded to the surfaces using a new 2-step self-etching adhesive (G2-BOND Universal, GC), or two 2-step self-etching adhesives (CLEARFIL SE BOND2; Kuraray, OptiBond eXTRa Universal; Kerr), or 3-step etch-and-rinse adhesive (OptiBond FL; Kerr) that served as gold standard control. At 24 hours, the bonded teeth were sectioned into stick shape (1 X1 mm width, 7-8 mm length), 20 sticks were subjected to μTBS test at 1 mm/min cross head speed. Failure patterns were evaluated under a stereomicroscope, and afterwards imaged using SEM.
Results: G2-BOND Universal and CLEARFIL SE BOND2 had the comparable bond strength, and the bond strength was significantly higher than that of OptiBond FL and OptiBond eXTRa Universal (Tukey test; p<0.05). SEM showed that failure mode of G2-BOND Universal and CLEARFIL SE BOND2 were mostly cohesive in dentin. And G2-BOND Universal had a lower dentin-bond interface failure rate than CLEARFIL SE BOND 2, and had more bond cohesive failure.
Conclusions: Regarding bonding performance, the new 2-step self-etching adhesive G2-Bond Universal bonded well to SiC-grounded dentin surface.
