Shear Bond Strength of Maxcem Elite/OptiBond Universal to Dentin

Objectives: Maxcem Elite (Kerr) is well-known to produce excellent bond strength in self-adhesive mode. The ability of Maxcem Elite/OptiBond Universal (Kerr) combination as an adhesive-resin-cement system was assessed by testing its shear bond strength (SBS) to dentin and compared to other adhesive-resin-cementation systems.
Methods: Dentin substrates were polished with 600 grit SiC paper prior to bonding. Each adhesive was applied to dentin per manufacturer’s instructions and the adhesive then either light-cured or not. Bonding jig (Ultradent) with a cylindrical mold (D=2.38mm) was securely placed on the adhesive-covered dentin substrate. The cement was condensed into the mold, and self-cured for one hour at 37°C (~90% humidity). The bonded specimens (n=6) were then stored in deionized water at 37°C for 24 hours before being subjected to shear force on an Instron mechanical tester following ISO29022:2013. A One-way ANOVA and Tukey’s method for pair-wise comparison to determine significant differences among groups (p<0.05) was used.
Results: Regardless if the adhesive was light-cured or not, the bond strength of Maxcem Elite/OptiBond Universal combination is significantly higher than all the other cement/adhesive combinations. When the adhesive was not light-cured with the competitive systems, the bond strength was lower and were not statistically different.
Conclusions: Maxcem Elite is a self-adhesive resin cement, that can also be used very effectively with Optibond Universal regardless of whether the adhesive is light-cured or not, yielding the highest SBS to dentin among all competitors resin cement/adhesive combinations.
