in Vivo Field Evaluation of a New Universal Adhesive

Objectives: Evaluate the satisfaction with a new universal adhesive (3M™ Scotchbond™ Universal Plus Adhesive (SBU+), 3M) in a first clinical evaluation.
Methods: The research was conducted via a web-based survey after a trial period of 8 weeks. Participants received a vial and 20 unit-dose of SBU+. Participants were asked to use the adhesive in their clinical routine following the instructions for use and to rate handling parameter among others. 412 dentists from Europe and USA participated in this evaluation during the testing period (Q4/2019 – Q1/2020). Quantified responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics (Minitab18, Minitab Inc., USA).
Results: Overall approx. 36100 restorations were placed, thereof ~ 24600 direct, ~8400 indirect and ~3100 other indications. Quantified responses on 5-level even-point-scales (coding: 1=not satisfied at all, 3=neutral, 5=very satisfied) were statistically analyzed and are summarized in table 1.
Data showed that the overall satisfaction rating and the overall satisfaction with handling of SBU+ were very high. Median of results for rating overall satisfaction and overall handling features was 5. Median of satisfaction rating with the new vial of SBU+ was 4 (see Tab 1). Overall, 95 % of dentists are satisfied or very satisfied with SBU+ after participating in the first in vivo evaluation.
Additionally, 223 dentists could compare SBU+ to currently used 3M™ Scotchbond™ Universal Adhesive (SBU); out of these 140 did not notice differences in handling, 83 did, mainly better overall handling (n= 36), better viscosity (n=32) or better color (n=22).
Conclusions: Dentists stated high satisfaction levels with the universal adhesive SBU+ overall, the handling and the new vial, and did notice improvements or no differences compared to SBU.
