Effect of SDF With Na2S2O3 on Composite Bonding and Color

Objectives: Evaluate the immediate effect of application of Sodium Thiosulfate after application of Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) on microtensile bond strength of two different restorative materials and color stability on dentin of permanent teeth.
Methods: The occlusally exposed dentin of thirty-two extracted human permanent molar teeth was used in this study. Specimens were distributed into four groups (n=10). (1) Control: Dentin rinsed with deionized water. (2) SDF: Dentin treated with 38% SDF. (3) SDF-KI: Dentin treated with SDF and KI. (4) Na2S2O3: Dentin treated with SDF and Na2S2O3. Each group was subdivided into two subgroups for microtensile bond strength (MTBS) testing; one bonded with a composite resin restoration and other bonded with an ACTIVA restoration. MTBS beams were prepared from each specimen after 24 hours and tested with Microtensile tester. In addition, the type of failure was recorded. The color of dentine was assessed by using Vita EasyShade and the readings were taken at different time points for each specimen (n=4): T0= Pre-treatment; T1= after dentin treatment by one day; T7= after dentin treatment by one week; and T14= after dentin treatment by two weeks.
Results: The means of MTBS test show no significant difference between Sodium Thiosulfate with SDF and control groups for composite and Activa restorations. While, Sodium thiosulfate with SDF and control groups show higher mean of tensile bonding strength than Potassium Iodide with SDF and SDF Groups for Composite and Activa Restorations. Total color change (DeltaE 2000) of Sodium Thiosulfate with SDF group show a significant difference with SDF group. While, no significant differences with control and Potassium Iodide with SDF groups were found.
Conclusions: Application of sodium thiosulfate followed by SDF treatment significantly increased the bond strength. Discoloration of dentin due to sodium thiosulfate treatment was decreased after application of SDF.
