Performance of 3M™ Scotchbond™ Universal Plus Adhesive on Aluminum-Trihydroxide Blasted Teeth
Objectives: Objectives: To achieve a durable bond to unprepared enamel, the naturally occurring biofilm layer present on teeth must be removed. One protocol involves application of a biofilm disclosing solution, followed by “blasting” the surface with aluminum trihydroxide powder and etching the surface with phosphoric acid. This study investigated the shear bond strength (SBS) of 3M™ Scotchbond™ Universal Plus Adhesive (SBUP, 3M) to teeth treated accordingly. Methods: Methods: Bovine incisors with exposed unprepared enamel, prepared enamel and prepared dentin were treated as follows according to manufacturers’ instructions (n≥6): Application of Bioclear Dual Color Disclosing Solution (Bioclear), blasting with Bioclear Blasting Powder (Bioclear), etching with 3M™ Scotchbond™ Universal Etchant, (SBUE, 3M), application of SBUP Etching with SBUE, application of SBUP Etching with SBUE, application of 3M™ Scotchbond™ Universal Adhesive (SBU, 3M; control)
A cylindrical button of 3M™ Filtek™ Supreme Ultra Universal Restorative A3 (3M, 2.36mm diameter, 2mm height) was cured on the adhesive surface. After storage in water at 36°C for 24h, SBS was measured according to ISO 29022:2013. Results: Results: The table shows the mean SBS in MPa. The standard deviations (SD) are given in parentheses. All data were analysed by ANOVA and multiple comparisons using the Tukey test (p<0.05). Means with the same letters are statistically the same. Conclusions: Conclusion: Various statistically significant differences were found. SBUP bond strength to teeth treated with a biofilm removal protocol involving aluminum-trihydroxide powder ranked among the highest measured in this study.
