Surface Gloss and Gloss Retention of Two Nano-Filled Universal Composites
Objectives: To compare surface gloss and gloss retention of nano-filled universal resin composites after chemical ageing. Methods: Two groups were tested - A: G-aenial A-Chord, GC Europe (Leuven, Belgium) and B: Filtek Universal, 3M (St. Paul, USA). Twenty samples of each composite were produced using a round stainless-steel matrix 6X1 mm. Each specimen was cured for 40 s using a LED device 1400 mW/cm2 (Silverlight, GC America, USA) and polished with sequential abrasive papers (600 to 1200 Grit). Specimens were stored for 24 hours in distilled water in a dark container, at room temperature and then immersed separately in 1 ml of a 75% ethanol solution for 15 days. Sample were removed every 5 days, thoroughly washed under tap water, and subjected to 10 strokes of brushing using soft-grade toothbrush and then dried gently with delicate paper napkins. The ethanol solution was changed after each reading. Surface gloss reading was performed at baseline, 5, 10, and 15 days using a glossmeter device (ETB6-6 Glossmeter, China) with a 60° geometry (light incidence). Values were expressed in Gloss Units (GU). Three randomized measurements were performed for each sample during each reading, and the average of those measurements was used for the analysis. Statistical differences were searched by means of the Student-T analysis for p≤0.05. Results: Group A presented significantly higher gloss surface values at 0, 5, 10 and 15 days (98.4±2.1; 95.7±3.2; 94.1±3.4 and 93.3±2.6 GU compared to Group B (86.9±4.1; 84.5±3.3; 82.7±3.6 and 80.3±4.7 GU respectively (p=0.02). No statistical differences were found in gloss retention, with an average reduction of 5.2% for Group A and 7.6% respectively, from initial reading to day 15. Conclusions: G-aenial A-Chord presented the highest gloss surface values. The two resin composites evaluated had excellent gloss retention after chemical ageing.
