Mechanical Properties of PMMA Resin and PMMA Resin Modified with Graphene Oxide
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine flexural strength, elastic modulus and Vickers microhardness of PMMA resin and PMMA resin modified with graphene oxide. Methods: The specimens (n=5) were made in both polymethyl-methacrylate thermocuring materials (PMMA resin [G1] and PMMA resin modified with graphene oxide [G2]). All specimens were polished with sandpapers (80, 120, 400, 600) and were stored at 37° C for 24 hours. Five samples per group (10.5x2.7mm) were used for three-point bending test in order to determine flexural strength and elastic modulus. Mechanical properties were evaluated in a Universal Testing Machine (Instron Corp, 1011) with a crosshead speed of 1mm/min, cell load of 5000N and load range 200. Vickers microhardness was determined by means of three indentations with 100g for 5 seconds. A Future Tech FM300 hardness tester was used. Results were analyzed with one-way ANOVA (p<0.05). Results: Mean and standard deviation (MPa) for flexural strength for each group: G1=91.5(16.1), G2=81.7(10.8); for elastic modulus: G1=2.69(0.31), G2=2.81(0.44); and Vickers microhardness: G1=22.0(2.3), G2=20.6(1.2). ANOVA test showed no significant effect between both materials (p>0.05). Conclusions: Under the conditions of this study, it can be concluded that graphene oxide would not influence mechanical properties of the PMMA resin.
