A Comprehensive Open-End Searchable AxiUm Database at MUSoD Orthodontic Residency
Objectives: Big data studies are highly dependent upon a reliable, comprehensive, searchable structured dataset. AxiUm is a popular dental information and management software implemented in many dental schools at both pre-doc and post-doc levels in the US. In dentistry, many data are obtained from the patient's medical and dental histories. As a specialty, orthodontics uses many special terminologies which are well defined by the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO). To teach the comprehensive orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning to the residents, with a particular emphasis on preparing them for the ABO board exam, in this project, we generated and tested a comprehensive, ABO-standard and searchable orthodontic form in axiUm. Methods: In axiUm (Revolutionary Academic Dental Software), we created an “orthodontic form”. Within this form, 6 categories of information were gathered as (1) Extraoral, (2) TMJ assessment, (3) Model analysis, (4) X-ray analysis, (5) Diagnosis, (6) Treatment plan, and (7) Time. All the necessary information for a comprehensive orthodontic diagnosis was entered in each of the 7 categories. In each category, each of the variables included multiple-choice options to select. For example, for “facial pattern”, choices were “prognathic”, “mesognathic” and “retrognathic”. During the construction of this ortho form, a special effort was made in creating the diagnosis column in which the ABO suggested terminologies were used. Results: After this innovative ortho form implemented for 3 years, we got good feedback from the residents, reflected in their improved orthodontic training, e.g. ABO written exam passing rate and scores. The features of our ortho form database are: 1 – comprehensive, including all the necessary detailed information for orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning as per ABO standards; 2 – open end allowing amendments (add or delete); 3 – searchable, making it a good source of data for research, clinical auditing and quality control. Conclusions: The Marquette University School of Dentistry (MUSoD) ortho form and dataset in axiUm works well for orthodontic residency training and education.
