Fluorosis Impact on the Life Quality and Aesthetic Perception

Objectives: Fluoride play an important role in preventing and controlling caries. However, its excess during teeth maturation is associated with dental fluorosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the esthetic perception of children and their parents about the appearance of children’s teeth being affected or not by fluorosis.
Methods: 411 children were examined, 10 were excluded due to the use of orthodontics appliance. Clinical examinations were performed by two calibrated examiners using Thylstrup and Fejerskov (TF) index. Children and their parents were asked to complete the Child's and Parent's Questionnaire about Teeth Appearance, with specific version for each of them.
Results: Results showed a prevalence of fluorosis of 40.75%, which 69% (n=113) were classified as mild, 12% (n=21) moderate and 17% (n=29) severe. No association between fluorosis and gender (Chi2, p=0.92) was observed. The questionnaire was answered by 293 guardians, 59% of children without fluorosis and 41% with fluorosis, similarly to the prevalence of fluorosis, reducing the possibility of bias. The questionnaire evaluated physical, psychological and social domains, and did not reveal significant difference between children with and without fluorosis in all domains. It also evaluated their general perceptions, alignment, color, health of children's teeth and no differences were observed between children or parents with or without fluorosis (p> 0.05 for all items).
Conclusions: The esthetic perception is different between children and their parents and the presence of fluorosis doesn’t impact this perception.
