Laypersons Esthetic Perception of Dental Mideline Deviation Related to Sex and Facial Biotype

Objectives: To determine the degree of aesthetic acceptance for laypersons according to the Facial Biotype (FB) and the amount of Dental Midline Deviation (DMD).
Methods: Descriptive, Transversal, Observational and Prospective Study. Photographs of Female Model (FM) and Male Model (MM) that presented an optimal occlusion, Mesofacial FB, with centered dental midline position, were modified creating deviations to the right of 1, 2, 3 and 4 mm, and dolichofacial and brachyfacial FB using the Adobe Photoshop CS6-2018 program. 108 respondents (54 male and 54 female) were asked to respond the measuring instrument through the Google Forms application to assess the aesthetic perception of photographic models. Results were evaluated by Chi Square Test (X2).
Results: In FM, dolichofacial FB with 0 mm of DMD was the most aesthetically accepted (73.1%) and the least the brachyfacial FB with 0 mm of DMD (11.1%). For MM, the dolichofacial FB with 1 mm of DMD (77.6%) was the most accepted, and the least accepted was the brachyfacial FB with 4 mm DMD (8.4%), with a statistically significant difference (p=<0.001) between FM and MM in the aesthetic perception “Very Attractive" and “Less Attractive" respectively.
Conclusions: The aesthetic perception of people not related to dentistry in relation to BF and the amount of DLMD was influenced by sex, differing in this study from the standards normally accepted by literature as aesthetically pleasing.
