EviDental: A One-stop-shop For Systematic Reviews in Dentistry

Objectives: Oral diseases are highly prevalent in the world and represent a great burden of morbidity. Treatment and prevention require access to the best available evidence. Given the exponential growth in the number of systematic reviews in dentistry and the complexity of the skills needed to identify them, new approaches are required. According to the vision of the Epistemonikos Foundation, a dedicated database of all the evidence relevant to dentistry would help bringing evidence closer to those who need it. The objective is to describe the methods of "EviDental", an unique and comprehensive database of evidence in the field of dentistry.
Methods: The database has been developed and will be maintained by Epistemonikos Foundation. Information technology experts and dentists from different countries are participating in its creation. The eligibility criteria of the systematic reviews included in the database were determined by consensus with specialists from all areas of dentistry.
The potentially eligible articles being screened come from two sources: traditional search strategy potentially eligible reviews in the main Epistemonikos database (www.epistemonikos.org), and reviews classified by the LOVE (Living OVerview of Evidence) algorithms of Dentistry topics (including dental caries, temporo-mandibular disorders, gingival and periodontal disease, dentofacial anomalies, pulp and periapical disease among others).
Results: The traditional search yielded 21,351 records. The initial number of reviews classified by LOVE algorithms is 6,451. More than 10,000 systematic reviews have been identified and classified according to the different dentistry topics.
Conclusions: We expect to provide a one-stop shop for systematic reviews relevant to decision-making in oral health. This systematic approach strives to uphold high methodological standards. It brings together diverse expertise, demonstrating successful collaboration across borders, languages and specialties using technology and teamwork.
