Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH): Association with Fluorosis, Dental Caries and its Impact on Quality of Life
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and severity of molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) and its association with fluorosis (FD) and dental caries (CD) and its impact on quality of life. Methods: For this, 411 children (11-14 years old) were evaluated in two public schools in Paranoá-DF. The clinical examinations were performed by two trained and calibrated examiners for the diagnosis of MIH, dental fluorosis (DF) and dental caries (DC), using the MIH-SSS (MIH Severity Scoring System); Thylstrup and Fejerskov and CAST (Caries Assessment Spectrum and Treatment), respectively. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics; for the associations between the variables the chi-square test was used and for quality of life, Mann-Whitney test with significance level of 5%. Results: %. It was observed a prevalence of 18% of children with MIH totalizing 74 children and 235 affected teeth. When the MIH was categorized as mild, moderate and severe, the percentage was 50, 9.45 and 40.55; respectively. Of the children with MIH, 37.8% presented dentin caries lesions and 40.8% DF. However, there was no association between the presence of MIH with DC or with DF. Additionally, no negative impact on the quality of life in children with MIH was observed. It was possible to conclude that the prevalence of MIH is comparable to the world averages, with mild and severe levels impairment being the most expressive. Conclusions: Finally, MIH was not associated with DF or DC, and had no impact on the quality of life of children diagnosed with this condition.
