Antimicrobial Effect of Composite Containing Zein Coated Magnesium Oxide Nanoparticles
Objectives: To evaluate the antimicrobial properties of composite resin after the incorporation of Zein coated MgO nanoparticles. Methods: MgO NPs were first coated with Zein Polymer using standard formulation procedure. Three types of dental composites (N-Flow, N-bulk and N-Ceram) were used in this study. A total of 240 discs shaped specimens were prepared (N=240), and divided into 12 groups, with 20 samples in each group (n=20). The 12 groups are subdivided into 3 groups based on the types of composite; with four groups for each composite type; control group with no nanoparticles and 3 other groups with Zein coated MgO NPs concentrations (0.3%, 0.5% and 1% by weight) respectively. The antimicrobial activity of all groups was tested against four types of microrganisms: 1) Streptococcus mutans, 2) Staphylococcus aureus, 3) Enterococcal faecalis and 4) Candida albicans. Two test types were used; a) the agar diffusion test (ADT) and b) the direct contact test (DCT). Data was statistically analyzed with one-way ANOVA followed by Least Significant difference test (LSD) at a significant level of p<0.05. Results: All composite groups with Zein coated MgO NPs induced a statistically significant antimicrobial activity (p<0.05). The highest antimicrobial activity was recorded for N-Bulk in both agar diffusion and direct contact tests, while all the control group showed the least and insignificant antimicrobial activity Conclusions: Zein coated MgO NPs have great potential in developing new composite resin with effective and superior antimicrobial properties.
