Retrospective Demographic Analysis Participants Treated with SDF-SDN-ART Restorations in Guajira-Colombia
Objectives: This randomized clinical study compares two groups of participants treated with silver diamine fluoride (SDF) or silver diamine nitrate (SDN) and restored with atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) technique in the management of dental caries among participants in Guajira-Colombia.
Methods: 180 participants aged 5 to 18 years, with at least one carious primary tooth, were recruited during a mobile clinic in Guajira-Colombia into a randomized control clinical study. The participants were randomly divided into two treatment groups. Demographic information was collected using a validated questionnaire previously used by our research group. A quality control protocol was used (marginal adaptation, anatomical form, caries at the cavo-surface margin, pain score) to assess the clinical outcomes of the restorations at baseline.
Results: Demographics and clinical differences in the quality of single-surface and multiple-surface SDF or SDN plus ART restorations were not observed at baseline. Participants self-report of oral lesions and clinical conditions led us to implement a new collection tool to compare their self-report with a clinical evaluation of the lesions and clinical conditions that they had. Conclusions: SDF or SDN plus ART are feasible dental clinical approaches for the management of dental caries compared to amalgam in this kind of population.
