Bond Strength of a New Self-adhesive Resin Cement to Zirconia
Objectives: This in vitro study measured and compared shear bond strength (SBS) of a new self-adhesive resin cement to zirconia. Methods: KATANA Zirconia STML (Kuraray Noritake) specimens were sectioned, sintered, and embedded in acrylic resin. Samples were cleaned with alcohol ultrasonication and air-particle abraded with aluminum oxide (50 µm). A total of 32 (n=16) cylindrical composite samples (2.1 mm diameter, 3 mm height) were bonded to the zirconia surfaces with either a new self-adhesive resin cement (Panavia SA Universal, Kuraray Noritake, Group SAU) or a composite resin cement system (Panavia V5 after treatment with Clearfil Ceramic Primer Plus, Kuraray Noritake, Group PV5), which served as the control. A load of 1000 g was applied for 10 min during the cementation process and composite resin cements were light irradiated for 40 s. The specimens were stored in deionized water at 37° C for 24 h and then mounted in a SBS tester (Bisco). SBS was determined at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min and expressed in MPa. The fractured surfaces were inspected with a stereo microscope and data analyzed with t-test (α=0.05). Results: Mean SBS values were 19.50 MPa for PV5 and 22.63 MPa for SAU. While SBS values in the SAU group were slightly higher than in the PV5 group, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups (p>0.05). The fracture modes were predominantly adhesive or mixed for both cements. Conclusions: The new self-adhesive resin cement provides the same short-term SBS as the “gold standard” multi-step composite resin cement system, without application of a specific zirconia primer.
