Full Mouth Ultrasonic Debridement: Piezoeletric versus Magnetostrictive Device; An Equivalence Randomized Clinical Trial

Objectives: The main aim of the current investigation is to compare the clinical performance of piezoelectric or magneto strictive device for the treatment of early/moderate periodontitis patients in a full mouth approach initial periodontal therapy.
The secondary aim will be to assess whether there are differences between the two approach in terms of patients related outcomes (PROM's)
A third aim consist to evaluate if the degree of experience of the operator could influence both results.

Methods: Patients attending the Unit of Periodontics, Dental department of the University of Siena, with a diagnosis of early/moderate chronic periodontitis will be consecutively enrolled in the protocol according to exclusion/inclusion criteria. After a full mouth periodontal charting they will be randomized in two experimental groups: test group (Full mouth ultrasonic debridement by piezoelectric device) and control (Full mouth ultrasonic debridement by magneto strictive device). After an healing period of three months all the patients will be re-valuated for the clinical and PROM’s variable assessed at baseline. Intragroup and intergroup differences will be evaluated via student t test and Anova test for normal data distribution (p<0,05).

Results: 46 patients were included in the study. Both treatments resulted in succesfull clinical outcome according to baseline data. No statistical significant differences were detected between experimental groups according the clinical outcome variables analysed (p>0,05).Neither patient related outcomes reveal statistical differences between experimental groups. Clinical experience doesn't affect neither clinical nor prom's variables.

Conclusions: Full mouth ultrasonic debridement seems to be succesfully deploied to early/ moderate periodontal patient both by ultrasonic and magnetostricctive device.
