Environmental Factors in the Perception of Sleep Bruxism in Children
Objectives: This research aimed to investigate if external factors and the caregivers sleep behaviors would influence the reports of sleep bruxism (SB) in children. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 186 subjects beeing 93 children aged 3-10 years followed at pediatric dentistry clinics, and their primary caregivers. The exclusion criteria were children with no contact between the teeth, illiterate parents/caregivers or parents/caregivers with special needs that could imped them to provide reliable responses. An expert in Pediatric Dentistry collected data by clinical exam in children and interviewed the caregivers using a validated and structured questionnaire. Results: Logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the association between the presence of SB and the independent variables, and the chi-square test was used to verify the association between the caregivers sleep quality and the presence of SB. The level of significance was set to 5% (p<0.05). Environmental factors as the presence of televisions in the bedroom did not establish positive association with SB report. However, SB prevalence was higher when the caregivers checked children sleep always/ almost always, when compared to caregivers that never/ almost never checked (p=0,018). A positive association was found between higher SB report and low sleep quality of caregivers (p= 0.022). Conclusions: The adults’ sleep pattern seems to have influence in their perception about the presence of SB in children.
