The International Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) in Germany

Objectives: As successor of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) the DC/TMD were internationally introduced in 2014. The new criteria were translated and adapted into different languages and cultural backgrounds, respectively. Nonetheless, the former RDC/TMD never gained much foothold in Germany due to a strong interest in individual oriented examination methods for temporomandibular disorders. In 2014 only 2 out of 31 dental faculties applied the RDC/TMD in daily practice and some used the criteria for research purposes only.
Methods: The DC/TMD network should aim to gain more comprehensive acceptance within the scientific community in Germany. Moreover, they should be introduced for general dentist. Within the last year, a couple of projects were established and/or completed in Germany to achieve this goal. This presentation will give an overview of the current implementation state of the DC/TMD in Germany after the completion of the translation process in 2018.
Results: Besides the fact that the translational process was officially approved, a video was produced to improve self-instruction in education and clinical practice. Furthermore, a training and calibration center was set-up in Leipzig, Germany. Moreover, the development of the German DC/TMD has been flanked by publications in German language.
Conclusions: During the last years tremendous efforts have been made to improve the acceptance of the DC/TMD in Germany. The unification of the TMD diagnostic system according to DC/TMD would strengthen the impact of research outcome in Germany and increase the scientific knowledge of TMD. Furthermore, it could increase the interest of general dentists for scientific knowledge and support their participation in practice based research.
