Performance Of A Simplified Dentin/Enamel Etchant with Rapid Curing 4mm Composite
Objectives: This study evaluates the performance of an experimental enamel / dentin etchant gel (ALE) with the 3s-PowerCure-System (Ivoclar). Due to its zirconyl-salt ZrO(NO3)2-based formulation, ALE has been shown to provide higher operator-tolerance and superior collagen-stabilization than phosphoric acid gel (PAG). The 3s-PowerCure-System (TPF: Tetric PowerFill, Adhese Universal, Bluephase PowerCure; all Ivoclar) was developed to support the ever-increasing demand for efficiency in dental restorative treatment. The combination of such a system with the safer and easier to use etchant ALE would evidently further increase overall benefits. To test compatibility, we evaluated shear bond strength (SBS) of ALE and PAG (Total Etch, Ivoclar) when used with the 3s-PowerCure-System or the clinically proven 2mm composite Tetric EvoCeram (TEC, Ivoclar). Methods: SBS in total-etch protocol was tested according to ISO-29022 on bovine teeth etched with the corresponding etchant (15s/30s on dentin/enamel, water-spray). Adhese Universal was employed as per IFU, before application of TPF or TEC. Bluephase Style (10s, 1200mW/cm2) was used for TEC-samples, while TPF-samples were cured with the Bluephase PowerCure (3s, 3050mW/cm2). Details shown in Table 1. Results: As evident from Table 1, the enamel and dentin shear bond strengths are comparable for ALE and PAG regardless of composite or light-curing protocol. Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, the zirconyl(IV)nitrate-based ALE proved a viable alternative to the established PAG in combination with 3s-PowerCure-System.
