Two-Year Survival of High-Viscosity Glass Ionomer in MIH-molars

Objectives: We assessed the clinical performance of a high-viscosity glass ionomer (HVGI) to restore severely affected MIH-molars.
Methods: One hundred thirty four fully erupted first MIH-molars with breakdown but without hypersensitivity/pain (MIH-Treatment Need Index 2a-c), suffering from moderate to deep carious lesions were treated. Selective carious tissue removal to firm or soft carious dentin was performed. Cavities were restored using a HVGI (EQUIA Forte, GC, Tokyo, Japan). Survival study design was performed for two-years. Our outcome was success, defined as absence of endodontic (pulp exposure, pain, hypersensitivity, abscess) or restorative complications (modified USPHS criteria). Survival probabilities were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Survival probabilities according to patients’ gender, dental arch and lesion severity were compared using Log-rank test.
Results: HVGI restorations showed estimated survival rates at 6, 12, 18 and 24 months of 95.5%, 94%, 87.5% and 87.5%, respectively. Patients’ gender, jaw and lesion severity were not significantly associated with survival success (p>0.05). Using USPHS criteria, a significant decrease in performance was noted during follow-up (p<0.05).
Conclusions: Following selective carious removal, HVGI restorations provide moderate survival rates in severely affected MIH-molars.
