Zinc Chloride as a Treatment of Halitosis in Patients with Orthodontics
Objectives: Halitosis is defined as an offensive breath for other people, we could say that around 85 percent of the causes of halitosis is due to the action of anaerobic bacteria, whom trough degradtion of proteins produce volatile compounds of sulfide (VCS) and this produce the bad breath characteristic of Halitosis. One of the biggest causes is a poor oral hygiene although the existence of another kind of causes like psychologic, pathologic and physiologic is not discarded. There are different methods to detect this ailment like organoleptic or the BANA test. The main objective of this work was to determine the effectiveness of zinc chloride based mouthwash treatment. Methods: We choose to use the BANA-Zyme Test due to the high degree of reliability that this test provides. The aim of this research is to evaluate the effectivity of a treatment based on zinc chloride as treatment of halitosis in patients with orthodontics. For this, 60 people with orthodontics were selected where the experimental group consisted of 30 people where a treatment was applied for a period of 2 weeks, twice a day (morning and night) and a control group of 30 people who were instructed to brush Normally for 2 weeks. Results: When performing the first measurement using the BANA-Zyme test before using the Zinc Chloride-based mouthwash. This study shows that 96.67% of orthodontic patients resulted in one of the positive levels (56.67% - weak positive; 40% - positive) in the test performed with the BANA-Zyme Test, thus showing the large population of patients suffering from halitosis and the need to indicate a specific treatment. Conclusions: This study has proven the reliability of the use of Zinc Chloride-based mouthwashes to reduce halitosis in patients with orthodontics.
