Effect of Cleaning Agents on Bond Strength of SDF-treated Caries-affected Dentin
Objectives: To evaluate the effect of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) application on the microshear (MBS) bond strength of glass-ionomer cements (GIC) to caries-affected dentin (Part I) and dentin-cleaning methods to reduce SDF’s potential effect on MBS (Part II). Methods: For part I, 56 extracted human teeth were randomly divided in 08 groups considering restorative material, 38% SDF application and dentin substrate. Restorative material was applied, and tested after 24hr water storage. The groups that were affected by the SDF application were selected for Part II. Teeth were randomly divided into 24 groups: cleaning mode (water, aluminum oxide, and pumice slurry), dentin substrate (carious and non-carious) and SDF application. Fracture mode evaluated under scanning electron microscope. Data were statistically analyzed by ANOVA. Results: SDF application resulted in the lowest MBS for the conventional GIC on caries-affected dentin (p<0.05). Cleaning with pumice slurry maintained the MBS in SDF groups when compared to the control groups (not treated with SDF). Fracture evaluation showed more mixed failures. Conclusions: SDF affected the MBS of conventional GICs. Pumice slurry was an effective cleaning agent after SDF application.
